How to Make Drawing EASY for Your Child in 3 Steps

In order to get your kids to draw consistently, which is essential for them to grow up to pursue a creative, curious, and passionate life, you need to make it easy for them.

Here are three ways to make it easier for your kids to draw:

In order to get your kids to draw consistently, which is essential for them to grow up to pursue a creative, curious, and passionate life, you need to make it easy for them.

Here are some ways to make it easier for your kids to draw:

  1. Find a nice place to draw.

Have a designated drawing space for them. A desk or table, a comfy chair or beanbag, etc. Store their art supplies there.

Lowering the amount of resistance for a new routine always makes it easier. This is true for any of us. Create a frictionless experience. If your child has to spend five minutes looking for and setting up their art supplies, they are less likely to begin. If all they have to do is open a drawer and get started, they are more likely to begin.

Encourage your child to clean up the art supplies after each use because a messy space is less inviting to draw in. Maybe your kid doesn’t care about the mess as much as adults, but they are going to have a harder time drawing if they don’t have anywhere to set their sketchbook down, or if they keep losing their pencils!

You might want to consider having them draw in a different room of your house too. This way, your child can have more choices, and more choices always lead to better learning and more enjoyment. They have a comfortable place to draw and they're not limited to just one spot.

  2. Provide them with some drawing tools.

You can find the right tools for your kids by visiting your local art store or buying them online. A few tools that you can provide for your child are pencils, markers, paint, watercolor, and paper. Keep an eye out for deals so it doesn’t get expensive. Here are some of my favorite supplies.

Whenever I’m in a creative rut, I switch things up and start painting or sculpting or try drawing something I’ve never tried to draw. It gets me excited about drawing, and I can’t wait to make more art.

  3. Help them decide what to draw if they’re stuck.

If your kids are stuck on what to draw, help them decide by asking them a question.

    For example:
    • “What are you thinking about right now?”
    • “What are you feeling?”
    • “What would you look like if you were a character in your favorite television show or movie?"

Then have them try drawing their answer.

Not only will this give them some creative ideas, but it will also help them visualize their thoughts and emotions. This is also an opportunity for you to bond with them and create a stronger relationship.

Letting them explore the art of drawing is an exciting experience, yet it can be challenging and irritating if they are not given the right amount of help. Our goal is to aid you in creating a fun environment for your children so they can continue to express themselves through art.
