I Was Bored Out of My Mind in Art Class as a Kid
Oct 07, 2026Here's a picture of something my family did Sunday:

I share this photo not because those are the ages Kids Cartoon Academy is for.
(KCA is for ages 7-14, and my kids are younger.)
I share this picture not because that's the exact type of thing we draw.
(We don't do arts and crafts. We focus on real drawing skills. The stuff the cartoon-and-comic art-loving kids really love. Pro techniques taught in kid-friendly ways.)
Instead, I share this for three reasons.
1. My life's work is nurturing the curious and creative sparks of kids.
Whether it was 15 years in classrooms or starting Kids Cartoon Academy four years ago—whether I'm foster parenting or biological parenting—protecting a kid's spark, so it can develop into everything it's meant to be, fires me up.
In this photo, you see my kids drawing with joy and confidence, with reckless abandon, undeterred by the perfectionism, comparisons, and self-doubt that lurk around the corner.
At KCA, we help kids fight those negative voices, so they can draw what they love with more skills and more confidence.
Most people lose that spark—if not in their tween years—in their adult years.
So KCA helps them keep it, develop it, and share it with others.
Our students have gone on to sell their art, become young art entrepreneurs, and win award after award in art competitions.
We're raising a generation of young, creative problem-solvers who aren't afraid to share their creative light with others.
2. You'll also notice how each of our pumpkins looks different.
Every KCA lesson offers guided drawing focused on a specific technique, plus plenty of room for your child's own unique imagination to shine.
This is because I was bored out of my mind as a kid in most traditional art classes.
I just wanted to draw Batman, Sonic, and my own crazy superheroes, monsters, and villains.
So I created the types of classes that I wish existed when I was a kid.
Apparently, they resonate with thousands of other kids today.
We teach real pro drawing techniques in ways that kids understand, so they can draw the stuff they love better than ever.
3. It's pumpkin season. And this month we're getting weird!
Every month we do timely lessons that capitalize on kids' natural interests to engage them in real artistic growth.
This month's unit is Weirdology 101: weird inventions, crazy mashups, fun mythologies.

Plus, there's an extra focus on inking outlines, cross-hatching, shading, and other cool tricks you can do with just a black pen.
Then in November, we're launching a unit on color theory for kids.
So if you want to combine your child's pencil passion with ink and bold, vibrant color, then you're not going to want to miss this fall's slate at Kids Cartoon Academy.
Stay creative,
Daniel
