I hear this a lot from worried parents:

“I don’t know if my kid is the artistic type anymore.”

Their kid tries something new, struggles at first, and gives up before trying again.

The kid might even cry because it didn’t “turn out right,” or get angry and crumple the paper.

The parent feels like their kid is just too much to deal with in this state.

So the parent decides their child just isn’t “the artistic type.”

That’s understandable, but it’s a big mistake.

What’s Really Going On

The kid just hasn’t developed the resilience yet.

They need help with their growth mindset.

The passion is there, maybe more extreme than ever, but their confidence isn’t enough to push them through the hard parts...yet.

June Didn’t Wait to Feel Confident

My student June started in my class as a shy beginner.

She didn’t wait to feel confident before she picked up a pencil.

She started, and confidence followed.

Her work hangs in galleries and art markets now.

Dew Came From a “Dark, Scary Place”

Dew came to me from what his mom called a “dark, scary place.”

When his mom signed him up for Kids Cartoon Academy, he was reluctant to attend for the first few sessions.

It wasn’t long before the class became the one thing he looked forward to each week.

He later ran a fundraiser selling his art that raised over $450 for his school teacher’s cancer treatment.

Neither kid was “confident” on day one, and hardly “the artistic type” starting out.
